Double danger

hatari

There are at least two dangers in extreme prosperity preaching:

  1. It leads thousands away from the Christ of the Bible to false hopes, shipwrecking faith and destroying families.
  2. It makes ‘moderate’ prosperity preaching seem fine by comparison. It defines a new low. It lowers the bar. It plays the rest of us onside.”We don’t do that prosperity gospel panda mbegu preaching! We don’t make people pay for miracles!” But in the same breath a ‘milder’, more subtle prosperity gospel slips in the backdoor and goes unnoticed as I finish my sermon by basically promising (or implying) the same un-biblical promises as the extreme preachers.

I wonder whether the second is even more destructive than the first when we think long term across the church.
